First, there are so many different types of blogs available to use. One type of blog that I looked into was having a class blog. The advantages to having a class blog are allowing the class to share their discoveries, learning experiences, and their work with people. As a class the blog also gives the students an opportunity to experience different forms of technology and all the goes into having a blog and all the different possibilities you could create on a blog.
However, like everything, there are disadvantages to having a class blog. First, I envision their being difficulty with maintaining the blog and keeping it up to date. Another disadvantage is that it could be time consuming and take away from other areas of learning in order to find time in busy schedules already to update the blog for the class. Also, the class might have different views on how to create the blog or what to post on the blog.
In the end, I would have a class blog in my class. I feel that it opens up more possibilities for students as well as showing them how to create a page and all the different items that can be created or placed on blogs.
I think you'll be surprised at how little time it really takes to keep a blog updated. If you make it part of what you already have to do anyway, it cuts down even more. i.e., if you were going to type out a writing prompt for kids for the projector, just put it on the blog in the first place, and throw that up on the projector. As they always say, work smarter, not harder.
